Michelle Duong

Australian pianist Michelle Duong is a soloist and chamber musician based in Melbourne who has completed a Bachelor of Music Performance (Honours) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She studied under renowned pianist Igor Machlak, a previous student and pianist-representative of the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

Michelle has received masterclasses from internationally acclaimed artists including Glenn Riddle, Kenji Fujimura, Dr. Anna Grinberg, and Olga Kharitonova. In 2019 Michelle was invited to give a solo recital at the new Ian Potter Southbank Centre in the Hanson Dyer Hall as part of the prestigious High Achievers Opening Gala Concert.

As a chamber musician, Michelle’s piano trio, consisting of Concertmaster and Co-Concertmaster of the University of Melbourne Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra, violinist Amy You and Principal Cellist of the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, cellist Joseph Kelly, have been broadcast on the radio station 3MBS’ The Talent Series. The trio were also invited to give a recital last year at the Four Seasons Fine Music Festival and at The University of Melbourne’s Open House.

Michelle’s teaching philosophy involves understanding the development of young children, the importance of fostering passion, talent and genius, and her role within that. She seeks to inspire joy with learning the piano and music by catering individually to each student’s interests and unique learning styles.

During her education at The University of Melbourne, Michelle has undertaken many subjects that look at the art of piano teaching (taught by esteemed pianist Glenn Riddle), coaching, wellbeing, motivation, positive psychology, and many more. It is with this that she has developed a unique yet effective take towards teaching that combines positive psychology, coaching, and music all into one, to ensure that students grow to become individuals who learn to be resilient, persistent, motivated and passionate about life.
