Sam Colcheedas is an accomplished Australian pianist, composer, and music educator whose musical journey is grounded in both performance and pedagogy. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and also holds an AMusA (Associate Diploma of Music) through the Australian Music Examinations Board. Sam has studied under some of Australia’s most respected piano teachers—Caroline Almonte, Stephen McIntyre, and Janis Cook—and further developed his composition skills through advanced studies in Italy with Professor Emilio Capalbo and Dr. Andrew Rindfleisch.
Throughout his career, Sam has enriched his artistry by participating in masterclasses led by international pianists including Geoffrey Saba, Ursula Oppens, Dr. Richard Shuster, Professor Ian Holtham, Glen Riddle, and Igor Machlak. As a performer, he spent five years as the resident pianist for the South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and remains active across solo recitals, chamber music, and collaborative projects. As a composer, Sam’s work has been commissioned by a range of cultural organisations. Highlights include Scenes of Nature (2021) for the City of Melbourne, It’s Getting Dark Now (2018) for the Royal Society of Victoria, and A Wayward Zephyr (2017) for the Carlton Connect Initiative. His string quartet Aromatic Fantasy (2019), premiered by the Invictus Quartet, was described as “melodic and stunningly evocative” by FeverPitch magazine. In 2023, Sam performed Scenes of Nature at the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Acqui Terme, Italy, and at the Conservatorio di Cagliari in Sardinia with Ensemble Scisma. With over a decade of experience in music education, Sam is dedicated to nurturing the musical growth of students from beginner to advanced levels. He has taught extensively across Australia, Europe, and Asia, including roles at the International Music Academy in Hong Kong, Aquinas College, St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar, Thomas Carr College, Kensington Primary School, and the Melbourne Piano School. His teaching approach integrates technical development, drawing inspiration from the Neuhaus tradition, with an emphasis on musical interpretation, performance preparation, theory, aural skills, and expressive artistry. Piano lessons are grounded in a spirit of shared learning, encouraging curiosity and growth in both student and teacher alike. |
