Selma Jia, Pianist & Music Educator

Selma is a dedicated classical pianist who has been studying piano since the age of six and is currently undertaking advanced studies with renowned pianist and University of Melbourne professor Igor Machlak.

With over ten years of formal training, she has demonstrated exceptional musical achievement from a young age. Selma now offers piano lessons to students of all ages from her home studio in Bentleigh East.

At age 11, Selma achieved ABRSM Grade 7 and later received an A+ result in her AMEB Certificate of Performance examination. In 2024, she was selected to participate in the prestigious Melbourne Young Chamber Music Academy, further developing her chamber music and performance skills.

Selma has performed at a number of Melbourne’s leading venues, including Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall, Government House, and Hansen Dyer Hall. She is also a member of her school’s Enhanced and Differentiated Gifted Education Program.

Selma teaches classical piano from her Bentleigh East home studio and can also travel to students’ homes throughout Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. She is able to teach in both English and Chinese, offering bilingual instruction where desired.

Piano lessons with Selma are thoughtfully planned and structured to help students make steady progress while enjoying the learning process. Lessons emphasize building a strong technical foundation, developing musical expression and phrasing, and learning efficient practice strategies. Selma breaks down challenging passages into manageable steps and provides clear guidance on how students can practise effectively between lessons. As an educator her goal is to nurture confident, independent musicians and inspire a lifelong love of music.
