Akash Dutta, Jazz & Contemporary Pianist

Akash is a highly accomplished jazz and contemporary pianist and keyboardist with more than 2 decades of experience. Over the past 10 years he has also worked as a music educator and piano teacher, teaching a wide range of styles—from jazz and contemporary to classical music. He now offers private piano lessons in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Akash began his musical journey in New Zealand at the age of 5, where he studied under the New Zealand Modern School of Music syllabus. After completing Grade 8 and a Teacher’s certificate with the school, Akash took on the role of a piano tutor, helping to inspire the next generation of musicians whilst still in high school.

In 2018, Akash commenced studies at Victoria University of Wellington, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Honours), receiving First Class Honours in Jazz Piano Performance in 2021. Since then, he has worked in various areas of music education, including private tuition, itinerant teaching within New Zealand public schools, and running workshops in music education and music production through community organisations.

Alongside his teaching work, Akash is an accomplished performer and composer. He has led numerous jazz and contemporary projects across New Zealand and performed in ensembles under the late Rodger Fox. As a composer, Akash has released four studio albums featuring his original works, which explore the intersection of contemporary jazz and the classical music traditions of India and the Middle East.

Now based in Melbourne, Akash is pursuing a Master of Music (by research) in Jazz and Ethnomusicology at the University of Melbourne. He looks forward to sharing his passion for music and teaching with a broader community.
