Tirta Nicholson, Piano Teacher & Music Therapist
Tirta Nicholson is a passionate music educator and therapist based in Elwood with over a decade of piano teaching and music therapy experience.
Tirta has an Australian Diploma of Music (AMusA – Piano) and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne (Therapy, with First Class Honours). She is a full member of the Victorian Music Teachers Association (VMTA). Over the past 18 years, Tirta has performed piano at private events around Melbourne. She studied classical piano with renowned pianists/teachers including Ronald Farren-Price and Priscilla Alderton, jazz with Steve and Bob Sedergreen, and vocal improvisation with Hilde Knottenbelt (Creative Voice, Melbourne). Tirta has a broad interest in musical styles including classical, jazz, alternative and world music, and a lifelong love of learning and teaching music. As a piano teacher, Tirta uses a resource-oriented approach (based on students’ strengths, skills and interests) and works collaboratively with students to achieve their musical goals. She provides a strong foundation in musical skills, including aural, sight-reading, theory, improvisation and composition. Tirta encourages her students to write and perform their own compositions, and organizes regular concerts. AMEB exam preparation is offered to students if they choose. But most importantly, the emphasis is on encouraging individual self-expression, fostering love and enjoyment of music and learning! As a music therapist, Tirta believes passionately in the power of music and also the therapeutic relationship, to foster health and wellbeing. Her broad experience brings an open-mindedness and compassionate approach to her work. In 2016-17 she undertook training with Keys of Life / Daphne Proietto, and qualified to teach piano to children with a diagnosed ASD. She has taught in this capacity both privately and at Eastern Ranges School, Ferntree Gully. After moving to Bali in late 2018 (where she taught English) for 18 months, Tirta returned to Australia and recently qualified as a somatic therapist. The embodiment and skills of nervous system regulation now inform her grounded approach to therapy, teaching and life in general. Tirta teachers in-home piano lessons in Elwood, Elsternwick, Brighton, and other Melbourne Inner South suburbs.
