Tirta is a passionate musician who has been teaching piano to children and adults for 8 years. She has an Australian Diploma of Music (AMusA – Piano) and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne (Therapy, with First Class Honours). She is a full member of the Victorian Music Teachers Association (VMTA) and a registered music therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA).
 
Tirta has performed piano at private events around Melbourne since 2000. She studied classical piano with renowned pianists/teachers including Ronald Farren-Price and Priscilla Alderton, jazz piano with Steve Sedergreen, and vocal improvisation with Hilde Knottenbelt (Creative Voice, Melbourne). She has a broad interest in musical styles including classical, jazz, alternative and world music, and a lifelong love of learning and teaching music.
 
As a piano teacher, Tirta uses a resource-oriented approach (based on students’ strengths, skills and interests) and works collaboratively with students to achieve their musical goals. She provides a strong foundation in musical skills, including aural skills, sight-reading, theory, improvisation and composition. She encourages her students to write and perform their own compositions, and organizes regular concerts. AMEB exam preparation is offered to students if they choose. But most importantly, the emphasis is on fostering love and enjoyment of music and learning!
 
As a music therapist, Tirta believes passionately in the power of music and also the therapeutic relationship, to foster health and wellbeing. Her broad experience brings an open-mindedness and compassionate approach to her work. In 2016 she combined her skills and interest in music therapy and teaching, undertaking supervision with Daphne Proietto, an experienced piano teacher and music therapist who specializes in teaching piano to children with an ASD/special needs. Tirta now also offers piano lessons to children with an ASD.
