Estelle Owens is a classically trained pianist and music educator with more than 25 years experience, now offering piano lessons from her studio in Hawthorn. She has recently returned from overseas where she worked as Head of Music at various international performing arts academies.
Estelle began playing piano at the age of 7, studying the AMEB Syllabus up to Grade 8 with renowned Tasmanian teacher Jennifer Filby of the Australian Rosny Children’s Choir. After a short hiatus experimenting with rock bands and piano bar music, Estelle completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours at the Tasmanian Conservatorium in 1997. Over the past 25 years she has worked in schools as a music teacher and Head of Performing Arts, from Kindergarten up to VCE level music, both in Australia and overseas in UAE, Malaysia and China. During her teaching career she has organised choirs, concert bands and woodwind and brass ensembles, and has been a musical director and producer of dozens of productions with primary and secondary students. Her work has encompassed performing, recording, and writing music as well as being an accompanist for eisteddfods and répétiteur for musical productions. Whilst in UAE she was involved with the Dubai Singers performing at the opening of the Maydan Race Course and in many other concerts performing works from the Messiah to Verdi’s requiem around Dubai. In Abu Dhabi her choir students sang for the Sheik of Abu Dhabi at an official function and she has organised and collaborated on many musical events such as Arts week, International Days, Model United Nations events, and other festivals in the UAE, Malaysia and China. Outside of the school environment, Estelle has served as Chair for the Tasmanian Music Educators Society where she was responsible for organising professional development for all music teachers in Tasmania. She has been a music examiner for Year 11/12 practical exams and critiqued theory listening papers for future exams.
