James Rushford is an Australian composer, performer, researcher and educator. Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts (Piano and Composition) from the California Institute of the Arts, James has been active professionally for over 15 years as a performing musician and teacher.
 
Classically trained (with a personal emphasis on 20th and 21st century music in his playing), James teaches late beginner to advanced pupils, covering a diversity of repertoire and technical methods. He encourages students to bring their own creativity, reflection and energy to their piano playing, whilst keeping lessons dynamic and enjoyable.
 
James has performed as a soloist with the Krakow Sinfonietta, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Australian Art Orchestra, and has composed original music for Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Neon (Oslo), Speak Percussion, Synergy Percussion, Ensemble Vortex (Geneva), Ensemble Offspring, Melbourne International Arts Festival (2006/2008), Unsound Festival (New York 2014) and Liquid Architecture (2018).
 
James’s ensemble, Golden Fur, has commissioned over a dozen new Australian works from composers including Anthony Pateras, Kate Neal, Cat Hope, David Chisholm, Natasha Anderson and Marco Fusinato.

As an educator, James has been on faculty at Monash University (2020), RMIT Unviersity (2012-2014) and California Institute of the Arts (2014-2017), where he coordinated undergraduate and graduate composition programs. He also co-coordinated, with Melbourne City Council, the Birrarung Marr Federation Bells program and the DisOrganised concert series for Melbourne Town Hall (2012-2014).
 
James has been artist-in-residence at La Becque (Lausanne 2020), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris 2017), Centre International des Récollets (Paris 2016), WORM (Rotterdam 2020), AIR (Krems 2019) and was awarded an eight-month fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart 2018).
 
His music has been published by Shelter Press (Fr), Pogus (US), Holidays (IT) Prisma (Norway), Bocian (Poland), Penultimate Press (UK), Black Truffle (AUS), KYE (US) and Unseen Worlds (US).

James teaches from his home studio in Ivanhoe on a Kawai GX5 grand piano.
