Olivia Wendlandt, Music Educator
Olivia Wendlandt, also known under her stage name Olive Yaah, is a classically and jazz-trained pianist
and keyboardist offering in-home piano lessons in Northcote and Melbourne’s Inner North for students of all ages and levels. Growing up in Germany, Olivia began piano lessons at 7 after discovering her parents’ Yamaha PSR-6 synthesizer. By age 9, she was winning classical competitions and later attended a state music high school, studying under Olga Razinkova and participating in masterclasses with Irina Edelstein. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Pedagogy for Jazz Piano at the Institute for Music in Osnabrück. During her jazz studies, she trained with leading Cologne and New York-based pianists Florian Weber and Thomas Rückert, and joined workshops with artists such as Christian McBride, Vijay Iyer, Lionel Loueke, and Dan Weiss. Around this time, she founded her band Relaén, releasing several records and opening for acts like Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Macy Gray, and Noname. Since moving to Melbourne in 2018, Olivia has become a highly sought-after pianist in the local music scene, which has led her to provide keys for artists like Bumpy, Tiana Khasi, Ajak Kwai, Erica Tucceri, Steady Weather, Will Larsen and many more. Outside of teaching, she regularly performs as a keyboardist for various projects, as well as with her own original music, which she produces and presents both solo and with her ensemble. As a teacher, Olivia is committed to finding the sweet spot between playfulness and consistent focused and structured learning, subtly pushing to success experiences that are tailored to the student. With teaching experience of 15 years, her approach is characterized by both the depth of Classical piano from Baroque to modern eras and the freedom of the improvisational Jazz, Funk, Soul and Contemporary realm. Always searching for the feeling in the music, she is committed to bringing out the musical voice and self- expression in a student. She believes everyone has an innate creative power and is passionate about helping students discover it. A solid piano technique, the creative use of jazz piano harmony, a vivid introduction of a wide repertoire, lyrical expression on the instrument as well as improvisation and composition are core elements of her teaching. Music Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts at Institute for Music, University of Applied Sciences Osnabrueck, Germany, 2018 (Focus on instrumental pedagogy, jazz piano) Other Languages: Olivia also offers piano lessons in German |
