Piano Lessons Maribyrnong
Craig Mattingley, Pianist / Composer / Producer
Craig Mattingley offers in-home piano lessons in Maribyrnong, Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Brunswick and surrounding suburbs.
Craig has taught piano professionally for approximately five years, predominantly primary aged children but also has experience working with adults and adolescents. In recent roles he has worked for agency-style music companies, visiting various schools to teach students in small groups or individually. This role exposed him to a plethora of learning styles and teaching challenges. As an educator he is highly adaptable and tailors his approach to different situations to suit students’ needs in the moment, while working to deliver a consistent program. Alongside working through music schools, he also maintained a private teaching practice, building strong rapport with his students. Craig has experience working with children with diverse needs, including neurodivergent conditions. His is a particularly patient teacher and sometimes employs unorthodox strategies to keep the student engaged and on task where needed. "With my students I try to instil a broad interest in music as a life practice - to have an appreciation for the intellectual challenges involved in its formation as well as for the sonic artform itself and the emotive relief it entails. An emphasis on personal expression and exploration I find essential, and encourage my students to find both music they like and dislike to discover the facets of their own taste. In my lessons I will often play music chosen by either me or the student, and show how the austere theoretical elements pressed upon them in class are applied measurably in liberally creative art practice. I believe technical development is best applied as a conduit for facilitating artistic inspiration, and balancing the two to be the most important aspect of musical education. Although my studies were in jazz and improvisation, I also have a strong grounding in classical music and feel comfortable working in many different styles." Genres Classical piano Contemporary / Pop Jazz Improvisation Composition Songwriting Other Instruments I have mostly used singing as a tool for my instrumental students to develop their aural skills, but have had the opportunity to teach a few singing students. My childhood choral background gave me invaluable technique and knowledge for this. I also have taught basic guitar and drums, as well as beginner clarinet. |
