Nick Marks - NYC based Pianist / Composer / Music Educator
Pianist, Composer and Educator Nicholas Marks has been performing, writing, arranging and teaching in Australia and overseas for 10 years. Nick specialises in Skype piano lessons for students looking for an outstanding music educator from the convenience of their own home.
Marks began taking lessons at age 9, playing elementary classical pieces and picking out his favourite tunes by ear. At aged 16, he began taking lessons with renowned jazz pianist / educator Steve Sedergreen, who unearthed Marks’ passion for improvising and playing jazz. Marks was accepted into the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music in 2007, completing a double degree in bachelor of Music / Laws (Hons). While at Monash, Marks had the opportunity to study with world class pianists and educators including Tony Gould, Marc Hannaford and Andrea Keller. Concurrently, he undertook studies in classical repertoire with Dr. Donna Coleman, Head of Keyboard at VCA. Since completing his formal music studies in 2010, Marks has worked as a leader, side-man, composer, arranger, producer and recording artist both in Australia and Overseas. He has undertaken intensive study trips to New York in which he has been mentored under the guidance of Sam Yahel, Jean-Michel Pilc, Aaron Goldberg and Dave Liebman. He has performed in venues Bennett’s Lane, Uptown Jazz Cafe; at Festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival; as well as internationally in cities such as Paris, London, Tel-Aviv, New York and Buenos Aires. As an educator, Marks has over 10 years experience working with musicians at varying stages of their musical journey (all ages, including beginners). Lessons are catered to the needs of the individual, in order to equip them with the necessary tools to develop their musical voice. His pedagogy is premised on understanding music as a language. His teaching takes a holistic approach covering ear training, harmony and sight reading, to facilitate the students’ ability to improvise, compose, and perform their own musical ideas, or preconceived compositions. This approach encompasses a broad variety of styles, with a particular focus on Jazz and Classical music.
