Riley Turner is a Melbourne-based pianist and music educator who graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music (Performance). He is currently completing a Master of Music at the University of Melbourne, specialising in music education and performance teaching.
With over ten years of teaching experience, Riley has taught piano professionally since 2017. From 2017 to 2023, he worked at Chasing Sound Music School as Head Piano Teacher, teaching private lessons up to 20 hours per week. Since 2023, he has been teaching from his private studio in Northcote. Riley has extensive experience preparing students for AMEB exams and recitals, and supporting students through assessments with confidence and care. Riley teaches a wide range of repertoire, including method books, exam syllabuses (with particular expertise in AMEB), popular songs, and standard classical repertoire. Lessons are tailored to each student’s interests and abilities, and music is often arranged or adapted to help students stay motivated while building strong technical and musical foundations. Piano technique is taught in a holistic and supportive way, drawing on Riley’s training in the Taubman Approach and the Alexander Technique. He teaches from a whole-body perspective, helping students play with greater ease, coordination, and comfort. Technical work is always linked directly to the music, with each exercise designed to solve a specific challenge rather than relying on repetition for its own sake. Music theory is introduced gradually and practically, always connected to the pieces students are learning. This may include learning chords by playing along to favourite songs, exploring scales through improvisation, or identifying patterns and harmonic progressions that support memorisation and musical understanding. Helping students learn how to practise effectively is a central part of Riley’s teaching. Lessons focus on developing concentration, listening skills, self-awareness, and confidence, while encouraging a positive relationship with music. Students (especially children) are guided to take increasing responsibility for their practice by setting goals, planning their time, and reflecting on their progress. This approach is shared with parents so they can feel confident supporting their child’s learning at home. In addition to teaching, Riley performs regularly as part of Skerzo Music, and brings his experience as a performer into his lessons. |
