Music Teacher Referral Program

About Our Referral Program

Melbourne Piano School operates with a unique collaborative business model dedicated to building community and supporting both our students and teachers to realize their full creative potential. We now offer the referral program to well-established and highly qualified piano teachers alongside our standard program.

The Melbourne Piano School referral program is a mutually beneficial arrangement where we refer prospective students to a piano teacher in our network as enquiries come through our website. All teachers in the referral program operate independently from their own studio and run the lessons as they normally would.

HOW IT WORKS

Melbourne Piano School receives hundreds of student enquiries each year through our website and marketing channels. When an enquiry comes through, we contact the student and forward it by email to the teacher in our network who we think would be the best fit for the student. Often this is based on the geographical location of the teacher's studio and proximity to the student. However we also take into consideration the teacher's special interests and qualifications, teaching style, and experience.

The teacher then follows up directly with the student via phone or email and sets up an initial lesson. We do not take payment, and all payments are made directly to the teacher, not Melbourne Piano School.

As a teacher affiliated with Melbourne Piano School you continue to operate your business independently as you normally would. While you are an integral part of our team, you are not an employee and there is no guarantee of a certain number of hours or students from us. However we are very specific about the teachers we take on board and in most cases a teacher affiliated with us can expect 10 - 15 student referrals per year for inner city locations.

Our History

A referral fee becomes payable to MPS after the third lesson if the student decides to continue lessons with you, or if the student drops out after attending one or two lessons.

For students that continue with you, the referral fee is paid in two portions: once after attending 3 lessons, and again after 6 months (if the student still continues with you at that point). Each referral fee payment is equivalent to 3 lessons plus GST, with a minimum fee of $140 + GST per student, per payment. So the maximum referral fee payable per student is equivalent to 6 lessons + GST, if the student continues with you ongoing beyond 6 months.

After the second lesson, we recommend invoicing the student for the remainder of the term so you have a financial commitment from them.

Once you've paid MPS the student referral fees, no other fees in relation to this student will be collected from MPS and the student becomes your client for as long as you keep them.

If the student decides not to continue lessons with you, the referral fee is 15% of the value of the lessons taken + GST. So, if no lessons are taken, there is no referral fee.

A tax invoice / receipt will be issued on request for referral fees at the end of the financial year. Referral fees can be claimed as a tax-deductible expense.

As a teacher with Melbourne Piano School we will create a profile page on our website which is SEO optimised to promote your work and attract potential students looking for a piano teacher in your area. The profile page will include your bio and qualifications, photos, google map, your fees, testimonials, and a registration link. Your profile will likely appear in the first page of google for searches for piano lessons in your locality.

With your permission we may also promote your work on external websites and occasionally with google ads.

We also offer ongoing support for other aspects of your music teaching work if needed. If there is any question or issue that comes up at any point with your studio, the Director and admin team are available to discuss via phone and email.

In addition to teaching, if you have strong performance skills and are interested in working at private events, you are welcome to apply to be a part of our Performance Team. We regularly receive requests for our pianists to perform at weddings, corporate events, and private parties throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria. Competitive performance rates are offered based on skills and experience.

All of our teachers are committed to offering a high professional standard of music teaching and customer service. We expect teachers to respond to referrals promptly (within 24 hours) and keep us informed of the status of referrals via email and an app called monday.com which can be accessed online or via an app on your phone. Here's an overview of teacher responsibilities in the Referral Program:

Teacher Responsibilities:
1. Prepare and deliver high quality music lessons to your students
2. Maintain a clean, professional, and welcoming studio environment
3. Maintain your own piano and/or keyboard in excellent working condition

4. Keep accurate records of lessons taught for referred students via the monday.com app, until the referral fee is paid.
5. Maintain warm and positive client relationships.
6. Update your availability in the MPS Teachers Availability Spreadsheet.
7. Respond to correspondence from the MPS admin team within 1 business day.
8. Pay referral fees as agreed by the due date.
9. Abide by all Australian, State, and Local laws in the delivery of music lessons, including having a valid Working With Children Check.
10. Advise the MPS Admin team within 7 days by email of any changes to your address, contact details, or profile information

As a Melbourne Piano School teacher you have the flexibility to choose your own working hours and decide how many students you want to work with. There is no minimum or maximum number of referrals we will send you. If things are getting busy, simply let us know, and we will hold off on sending referrals your way for a while. You can also specify the kinds of students you prefer to work with.... for example if you specialise in certain areas, or if you only want to work with adults or only children.

To Apply to work with Melbourne Piano School you must have:

- minimum Gr.8 level AMEB, or a tertiary degree in music, or working towards completion of a music degree
- minimum 2 years piano teaching experience
- valid Working With Children Check (Victoria)
- Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency

Please apply via our Application Form.

We will review your application and get back to you within 14 days.
