Working With Melbourne Piano School
Melbourne Piano School operates as a team of piano teachers across Melbourne who offer piano lessons to students of all ages and abilities from private studios and the students' homes. We have diverse skills and musical interests and share in common our passion for piano, excellent interpersonal skills, and a desire to bring out the best in our students.
Melbourne Piano School is currently seeking expressions of interest from experienced piano teachers to join our team. Work can take place from your own home studio, a commercial studio you lease, or at the student's home.
Please read the information below carefully before applying, and contact us if you have any further questions.
Minimum Requirements:
- completed Gr 8 AMEB piano or equivalent
- minimum of 2 years piano teaching experience
- valid ABN
- valid Working With Children Check (Victoria)
- Australian citizen or permanent resident
Commitment:
Due to the nature of music education, we are seeking teachers who have a long-term commitment to piano teaching in Melbourne. We ask for a minimum of 2 years commitment to working with your students, after a 3 month trial period. We value continuity in the student-teacher relationship. You have the flexibility to determine your own working schedule -- including how many students you take on with MPS, your working hours and days, and vacation time.
About Our Students:
Melbourne Piano School students are of all ages and all backgrounds. Our client base is about 50% adults and 50% children. The majority of students are at the beginner or intermediate levels, while a smaller portion are advanced students.
Teaching Agreement:
You would be providing services to Melbourne Piano School as an independent contractor. This is a non-exclusive agreement, meaning you are still able to take on your own private students and work with other schools as long as this work doesn't conflict or interfere with your work with MPS Students. You invoice Melbourne Piano School once per term for ongoing students, and once per month for casual students.
Teacher Responsibilities:
1. Prepare and deliver high quality music lessons to your students.
2. Keep accurate records of lessons taught, cancelled, or rescheduled via our online booking system.
3. Maintain student progress notes.
4. Maintain warm and positive client relationships.
5. Serve as a contact point in cases where students need to reschedule or cancel a lesson with you, and for any casual bookings. This includes any cancellations or lesson changes made due to lockdowns.
6. Update your availability in the online booking system and notify the MPS admin team for any vacation time you wish to take. It is essential that your current availability be kept up to date at all times. In the event you are unable to teach a scheduled lesson, you agree to contact the parent / student to find a time to reschedule, and update the MPS online booking system.
7. Familiarise yourself with MPS policies and remind students of the studio policy when needed.
8. Respond to correspondence from the MPS admin team within 1 business day.
9. As part of each initial lesson, discuss enrolment options and invite the new student to sign-up for the term. Contact the MPS Admin team within 24 hours of the initial lesson to share how the lesson went and the student's enrolment preferences.
10. Maintain a valid Working With Children Check, COVIDSafe Plan, and abide by all relevant government regulations in conducting music lessons.
11. Optionally, if choosing to have students involved in MPS recitals, to prepare a list of students attending & their performance pieces, and to be present at and support students at the event.
And, if teaching from your own home / commercial studio:
1. Maintain a clean, professional, and welcoming studio environment.
2. Maintain your own piano and/or keyboard in excellent working condition.
Teacher Payment:
Payment is based on an hourly rate for the lesson teaching time. You invoice us once per month for lessons taught in the previous month. We review and pay invoices by electronic funds transfer within 5 business days of receiving it from you.
What We Offer:
At Melbourne Piano School you have the opportunity to share your passion for music education in a warm, supportive, and flexible working environment. We are market leaders for piano teaching in Melbourne's inner suburbs and have consistent high demand for our piano lessons.
As a teacher with Melbourne Piano School you are offered a high degree of independence to teach students according to your own style, schedule and methods. You have the flexibility to choose how many students you take on, and what level or age of students you prefer to work with. Our work is to support creating an environment where teachers thrive in sharing their own unique gifts with their students.
We take care of all student invoicing, and give you access to our online booking system. Our admin team handles most student scheduling at the beginning of the term, and during the term as new students enrol (any subsequent booking changes or casual bookings with your existing students will need to be updated by the teacher in our easy-to-use online booking system).
We create a teacher profile on our website to promote your studio through google and social media. We work with SEO consultants to ensure that your profile will be on the first page of google searches for piano lessons in your locality, usually within a few weeks.
You may optionally choose to be involved in our student recitals which are offered at a beautiful venue in Richmond.
We offer ongoing support for all aspects of your music teaching work as needed. If there is any question or issue that comes up at any point with your students, the Director and admin team are available to discuss via phone and email.
Other Opportunities - Performance
In addition to teaching, if you have strong performance skills and are interested in working at private events, you are welcome to apply to be a part of our Performance Team. We regularly receive requests for our pianists to perform at weddings, corporate events, and private parties throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.
If you feel like it would be a good fit to work with us, please fill out the application here. Or if you have any other questions, please contact Andy Harrison, Director of Melbourne Piano School at 0417 561 473.
